Online Poker Room Tournaments
When it comes to internet poker room tournaments, you will want to make sure you
understand the types before you dive into one. These poker room tournaments can
basically be divided up into 5 types. Consider each one before choosing what
works best for you and your game.
Real Money, Fake Money, and Freerolls
This is all about what you pay to get in. Each is a little different. In a real
money tournament you will have to invest real money as a deposit to get in the
tournament. A fake money, or play money tournament takes only play money to get
in. In turn, you win only play money so these tournaments exist mostly for
practice. Thirdly, a freeroll is a tournament where you pay nothing to enter
but can actually win real money.
Scheduled Tournaments and Sit-n-Gos
A scheduled tournament is one that is set to start at a particular time. Usually
these times are posted in the lobby of your poker room. On the other hand,
sit-n-gos are not scheduled at all. They start as soon as enough players are
signed up, and are usually single-table tournaments.
Regular Tournaments/Satellite Tournaments
The biggest difference in these two types of tournaments is the winnings. If you
win a regular tournament you will likely win money. On the other hand, if you
win a satellite tournament you will likely win entry in another tournament with
a higher buy in.
Freezouts and Rebuy Tournaments
You will encounter tournaments that will allow players to buy additional chips
for a period of time (generally the early rounds) before it becomes a
freezeout. These rebuy periods offer a chance for those suffering early tough
luck to stay alive a little longer and catch their winning streak.
Single-Table and Multiple Table Tournaments
In a single-table tournament there is, you guessed it, only one table where the
game happens. The winner is the person who gets all the chips at the table.
When a player loses all his chips, he is eliminated from the table. A multiple
player tournament, on the other hand, allows a virtually unlimited number of
players to play. Once a player loses all his chips, someone else takes the
vacant seat.
