Calculating Poker Pot Odds

In most any poker game, the ability to calculate pot odds is imperative. The goal is generally to play the odds to determine whether or not calling is going to be a money making decision for you as a player.

Figuring Pot Odds

The most obvious way to figure pot odds is to take the total number of mystery cards and compare that number to the number of outs you have. All you do from there is simple division. If for example, you are playing Texas holdem and are four to a flush on the turn, do the math; there are 52 cards minus your two and the 4 up on the flop, so there are 46 unknowns. Of the 46, 9 are the suit you need on your flush. That means there are 9 cards left that can help you out. Simplified that means the odds against you making it are 4 to 1.

Poker Odds: A Short Cut

An easier way of figuring out your pot odds is to take your total outs, multiply that number by 2, then add 2. The resulting number is approximately the percentage chance of you making the hand. Keep in mind, however, that this method only estimates the chances of you hitting your out card on the next one. It does not take into consideration whether or not you may have more than one card remaining. So remember, your call should be no more than the percentage number of what is already in the pot. If the number you get is 10, your call shouldn’t be more than 10% of what is already in the pot.

Pot Odds Cheat Sheets

Though they aren’t as “cool” in person, a pot odds cheat sheet can be great if you are playing on line. The sheet, which you can get at a number of on line poker sites, shows you the odds against you’re making a hand at a glance.

Pot Odds Calculation: Is it worth it?

It is no doubt that calculating pot odds is a pain. In games where there are more known cards, it gets even harder. However, it is worth it to do the calculation or use a cheat sheet. One of the most common ways to lose money is to hang on to unprofitable draw hands. For such a common problem, simply calculating pot odds is an awfully easy and profitable solution.
