Advanced Poker Tutorial
Now that you have reached the status of an advanced poker player, there are
not very many strategies that you do not already know about for improving your
game. So, we have asked our poker experts at Poker Watchdogs to do the exact
opposite. We decided to make this tutorial about plugging the leaks in your
poker game and less about improving your overall poker game.
Advanced Poker Strategy : Plug The Leaks
What do we mean when we say "Plug The Leaks"? This lesson is all
about hands that you should be laying down more often than you
play them. Hands that are more likely to drain your bankroll and
put a stop to your overall losing days. Don't be stubborn and listen up,
these guys know what they are talking about!
Top Cards On The Flop (Overcards)
There will be many, many times when you are playing a nice hand (Ace King)
and the flop comes Two, Seven, Four or something similar. You have nothing
except for some high cards. All too often, advanced players will keep
playing these hands, even though you know you are a 7-to-1 underdog in improving
your hand. You play these hands to "test" the waters and see if you can steal the
pot. Or, maybe you think you really do have the best hand. Whatever the reason
for staying in the hand, you only have 6 outs to improve your hand.
Now, we are not talking about the times when you have open-ended straights or
gut-shot straights. If you do decide to stay in, these criteria should be met:
- There should only be a few people in the pot.
- The pot needs to be large (which contradicts the above).
- The best flop would be a rainbow flop (all different suites). This will reduce
the flush possibility.
Overall, this is usually one of the biggest leaks in an advanced players game. You
are better off folding these hands 80% of the time.
